Nine short stories and a novella

A sense of profound sadness pervades many of the stories.  The dismal circumstances and burdens are often overwhelming.  Sometimes though something good happens.

The story that touched me the most was "Ugly Cruising".

I'm still struggling with the stereotypical images, however.  I like this author's writing but can't understand her motives for making certain statements.
